Buspar

Classification: Anxiety
Generic Name: Buspirone
Typical Brand Names: Buspar

This medicine contains the active ingredient buspirone hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called an anxiolytic.

The way in which buspirone works is not fully understood. It appears to act by modifying the release of a mixture of neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are stored in nerve cells and are involved in transmitting messages between the nerve cells.

Buspirone is thought to enhance the activity of the neurotransmitters dopamine and noradrenaline, and to reduce the activity of the neurotransmitters serotonin and acetylcholine in the brain.

The overall effect is to relieve feelings of anxiety.
